01 · The site
One market out of many
Portugal licenses its online gambling through a regulator called SRIJ. Betway held one of those licences and ran a Portuguese site.
Betway is a brand of Super Group, a company listed on the New York stock exchange. It runs Betway in a lot of countries. Portugal was one of the smaller ones.
Portugal is a tightly controlled market with a small number of licensed sites. When we checked the public list there were 19 licensed sites. That is not many for a country of ten million people.
02 · The shutdown
Handed the licence back
In January 2026 Super Group said openly that it was leaving Portugal. The regulator then approved its request to give up the licence.
The company explained itself clearly, which is rare in this archive. It said that after a thorough review it had decided to give up its licence in Portugal. It wanted to focus on existing markets and growth areas with more promise.
In plain words, Portugal was too small to be worth the effort. The company would rather spend that money in Europe and Africa.
This was not a punishment. The licence was handed back, not taken away.
We checked the regulator own list of licensed sites on 10 September 2026. It names 19 sites and Betway is not among them.
03 · The money
Nothing was published, and the site is broken
This is the weak spot. We could not find a single word about what happened to Portuguese player money. No deadline, no plan, no complaints.
We tried to load the Portuguese address twice on 10 September 2026. Both attempts failed before any page appeared, because the security certificate on the site has expired.
That is a small detail with a clear meaning. They have to be renewed. Nobody has renewed it. The company has abandoned the Portuguese address.
The good news is that the company is very much alive. Betway still trades in other countries, including Spain, where it remains on the Spanish regulator public list of licensed sites. We checked that too.
So a Portuguese player still owed money has a large listed company to write to, and the Portuguese regulator behind it. That is a strong spot compared with most closures here.
04 · The receipts
How we verified this record
Every claim on this page is graded by how firmly we could check it. Confirmed means we saw it in the operator’s own notice or in a document that cannot easily be faked. Observed means we saw it ourselves on the live site or domain on the date given. Unconfirmed means it has been reported but we could not prove it.
05 · The questions
Betway Portugal – the questions still open
Q. Has Betway closed?
Only in Portugal. It gave up its Portuguese licence in January 2026 and still trades in other countries.
Q. Why did it leave Portugal?
The company said it wanted to focus on existing markets and areas with more growth potential. Portugal was too small to be worth it.
Q. Was the licence taken away?
No. The company asked to give it up and the regulator approved the request.
Q. Is the Portuguese site still there?
Not usefully. Its security certificate has expired, so browsers will not load it properly.
Q. What happened to my balance?
Nothing was published. Write to Betway through one of its live sites, and take it to the Portuguese regulator if you get no answer.
Q. Is Betway still licensed anywhere in Europe?
Yes. It is still on the Spanish regulator official list of licensed operators, which we checked.
