01 · The casino

VGW’s slots-only brand, eight years old

LuckyLand Slots launched in 2018 as VGW’s second American sweepstakes brand, a slots-only sibling to Chumba Casino using the same dual-currency model: Gold Coins for play, Sweeps Coins redeemable for cash prizes, and a free entry route. VGW, founded in Perth in 2010, is the largest operator in the sweepstakes market by a distance, with Chumba, LuckyLand and Global Poker under one roof, revenue reported at close to 4.8 billion dollars for 2025 and around 1,300 staff. LuckyLand was never the flagship, but it was a household name in the sweeps world for most of a decade.

By 2026 the map it could sell into had shrunk badly. VGW’s brands had been pulled from a run of states after cease-and-desist letters and new legislation; Chumba went from around 50 states and territories to 34. LuckyLand carried the same restrictions, and a slots-only brand with a narrower audience was the obvious one to retire first.

02 · The shutdown

A staged wind-down announced in advance

VGW announced the closure in the summer of 2026 with three dates. Gold Coin purchases stopped on 3 August 2026. All gameplay ended on 24 August 2026. The platform and player accounts close on 14 September 2026, which is also the final deadline for submitting Sweeps Coins redemption requests. Balances do not transfer to Chumba or Global Poker; LuckyLand coins stay at LuckyLand and are either redeemed there or lost.

Two things sit behind the decision. The first is regulatory pressure on the dual-currency model: bans in Tennessee and Oklahoma in May 2026, earlier restrictions in other states, and a lawsuit in Maryland aimed at VGW specifically. The second is turmoil at the top of the company. In July 2026 founder and chief executive Laurence Escalante resigned after being charged in Australia with a dozen offences, and Mats Johnson was appointed acting chief executive. VGW has not tied the closure to either in its own words, but the timing is what it is, and the company has said it is concentrating on Chumba and Global Poker.

03 · The money

A real deadline, a real minimum, and no second chance

This is a closure where players have been told exactly what to do and by when, which is rare. Sweeps Coins redemption requests must be submitted by 14 September 2026. The usual VGW rules still apply: Sweeps Coins must have met their playthrough requirement before they are redeemable, and the standard minimum redemption of 50 dollars applies, so small residual balances below that line cannot be cashed out at all. Gold Coins have no cash value and are not redeemable. After 14 September the accounts close and nothing further can be claimed.

If you have anything there, do it now rather than in the last week. Check that the name, address, phone number and payment details on the account are correct and match your identity documents, because a verification failure in the final days is the most likely way to lose a balance. Save screenshots of your balance, purchase history and any submitted redemption request. VGW is a large, solvent operator and there is no reporting of it failing to honour redemptions; the risk here is missing the deadline, not the company vanishing.
